Acute Armoedebestrijding / Combating Poverty
Nederland heeft in 2006 eenmalig een extra bedrag van 12,6 miljoen ANG ter beschikking gesteld voor een kortlopend programma Armoedebestrijding. Relevante organisaties (overheid, non-gouvernementele organisaties (NGO’s), community based organizations (CBO’s) en organisaties uit de private sector) konden projectvoorstellen indienen ter verlichting en/of bestrijding van acute armoede. De looptijd van de projecten kon maximaal één jaar zijn.
Er zijn 104 projecten goedgekeurd: Curaçao 45 projecten (ruim ANG 5 miljoen), Bonaire 28 projecten (ruim ANG 2 miljoen), Sint Maarten 17 projecten (ongeveer ANG 3,5 miljoen), Saba 7 projecten (ruim ANG 1 miljoen) Sint Eustatius 7 projecten (ruim ANG 1 miljoen).
Nederland had dit extra programma voor armoedebestrijding opengesteld voor de vijf eilandgebieden van de Nederlandse Antillen. De lopende samenwerkingsprogramma’s op het gebied van economie, bestuurlijke ontwikkeling, onderwijs en de sociale vormingsplicht dragen ook bij aan armoedebestrijding, maar dit is meer op de lange termijn. De financiering van nieuwe NGO projecten via de AMFO lag toen, vanwege de reorganisatie van de AMFO, tijdelijk stil.
Per eilandgebied is, in overleg met vertegenwoordigers uit de overheid, de non-gouvernementele sector en de private sector, vastgesteld welke armoedeproblemen op de eilanden allereerst aangepakt moesten worden. Projecten konden worden ingediend door organisaties, in overleg met de eilandelijke coördinator armoedebestrijding. Op elk eilandgebied waren één of twee armoedecoördinatoren aangewezen.
Het programma is begin 2008 afgesloten.
Combating Poverty
In view of the necessity for combating poverty in the islands of the Netherlands Antilles, the Netherlands decided to make an amount of NAG 12,6 million available in 2006 for a short-term Program Combating Poverty directed at the acute alleviation of poverty. Government, NGOs, CBOs and other organizations from the private sector could submit project proposals.

As a consequence of a very distorted division of income, there is much poverty to be found in the Netherlands Antilles, in spite of a higher average income per capita of the population than in most surrounding countries. At present, a number of cooperation programs that are financed by the Netherlands are being implemented, notably in the area of sustainable economic development, administrative development, education, security and maintenance of law and order, and mandatory social training. These programs do not have the combating of poverty as an explicit objective, but often do contribute -directly or indirectly- to alleviating or combating poverty. In addition, the Netherlands makes funds available to non-governmental organizations for social projects, often aimed at the direct and indirect combating of poverty.
The program has been closed at the start of 2008.
